Cannabis known as marijuana features the most notable chemical substance called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It is one of the most common drugs used today. It has limited dangerous side effects and gives the user a euphoric high. However, some view Marijuana as a gateway drug, meaning that it may lead to the use of harder drugs such as cocaine or heroin. This is why it is important to seek treatment for marijuana and go through a marijuana detox program in order to overcome a dependency on drugs.

Marijuana

Marijuana can be home grown and has many street names. Some of the names include; pot, weed, MJ, Mary Jane, reefer, ganja, grass, and the list goes on. There are also other names for a combination of marijuana and other drugs such as crack or heroin.

Side Effects

There are many side effects of marijuana use. They tend to mild compared to some of the harder drugs. Some of the acute effects include a feeling of euphoria like high. However, it can also produce anxiety. Some people believe that long term use of marijuana can actually increase the risk of depressive disorders and even schizophrenia. It is also believed to have an effect on memory.

Rehabilitation

Just as with any other drug, there are rehab programs for marijuana use. It’s a tricky situation though because it is widely thought that marijuana doesn’t have addictive properties. In this case, the user is more addicted to the high than the substance itself. If this is the case it is important for the user to seek treatment for such behaviour. There are many services out there including inpatient services, outpatient, intensive outpatient, and residential rehabilitation. There are also detox services available.

Counseling

Another important factor in kicking a marijuana habit is counseling. Counseling provides the user an opportunity to explore the reasons for seeking a high. Counseling combined with proper education can lead to a full recovery from the need to get high.

Aftercare

If one does enter a treatment center for marijuana use it’s important that aftercare is properly sought out. By seeking proper aftercare after treatment the user is able to continue the recovery process. They will have a support system in case they feel the urge to use again and have access to the recovery tools they were given in rehab. This also includes 12-step programs such as Narcotics Anonymous and finding a sponsor.
